The Theory (Procedural Animation)
“The Theory” is a two minute computer animated short in which a classroom transforms as scientific equations from a textbook come to life and become the physical phenomena they describe. It was created during the Winter Quarter of 2006 for a Procedural Animation course taught by Rick Parent offered by the Computer Science and Engineering Department at The Ohio State University. Our team consisted of six undergraduate computer science students and one masters student in the College of Arts.
The emphasis of the course was to create animation not by keying frames, but instead through scripts or code that direct the animation. We chose to use Maya 7.0 to model the scene and MEL (Maya Embedded Language) to script the animation.
My primary responsibilities were to code the galaxy and planet scene, and the explosion of the atom that transitioned into the galaxy and planet scene. I also did the sound for the animation, which included creating new sound effects and cutting the music to synchronize with the animation. More details on the how the animation was made and how the team divided up the work can be found in a mirrored version of the team’s site.
